Medical Copyediting

This course aims to provide students with an overview of medical copyediting. The class examines the mechanics of language and usage and editing concepts specific to medical manuscripts. Using the American Medical Association Manual of Style and its online resources, students gain hands-on experience editing general medical materials. Topics covered include the role of a copy editor, correct grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and usage, and an introduction to medical nomenclature.

Skills / Knowledge

  • Differentiate between the roles of a proofreader and copy editor.
  • Identify different levels of editing.
  • Edit for grammar, punctuation, spelling, and capitalization.
  • Edit for correct and preferred usage, including medical nomenclature basics.
  • Recognize and correct various errors in medical writing, such as jargon, inclusive language, redundant words, incomparable words and phrases, and eponyms.
  • Develop the skills to edit short medical manuscripts effectively.
